Isabelle will introduce you to the Chinon wines from our 4 properties and will show you the cave, if you are interested.

« TROGLODYTE », CAVE DWELLINGS

The caves were dug mainly to extract the stones which were used to make the surrounding buildings. Thanks to their large size and stable temperature we use them today to age our wines in barrels or in “foudres” (larger barrels).

Some parts of the caves were also used for as dwellings. The central cave with its chimney was simultaneously a kitchen, a dining room, and a bedroom. Jérémy, the last inhabitant, left the cave only in 1911 to live in the adjoining small house, which had just been finished.  After Jérémy's departure a clog maker lived in the ground-floor room of this small house until the 1960's, when it became a tasting cellar.
