Clos des Marronniers

Chinon Red 2021 (75 cl)

Domaine du Roncée
Chinon
Vintage 2021

The CLOS DES MARRONNIERS from Domaine du Roncée is a classic wine by Christophe BAUDRY and Jean-Martin DUTOUR.

The old Cabernet Franc vines thriving on these slightly clayey gravel soils offer richer wines than those from the plains of the CHINON appellation, balancing the freshness of the fruit with the power of an age-worthy wine.

EXPERIENCE RANGE

Jean-Martin DUTOUR took over the Domaine du Roncée in 1993. In the vineyard, inter-row cultivation stimulates soil life, high trellising captures maximum light, and meticulous pruning and leaf thinning ensure that the grapes are well exposed to the sun for optimal ripening. Hedges, woods, trees and shrubs, wet areas, and uncultivated spaces are preserved around the vineyard to maintain biodiversity. This continuous commitment to sustainable viticulture was recognized in 2017 with the HVE (High Environmental Value) certification. In the cellar, after partnering with Christophe BAUDRY in 2003, Jean-Martin built a winery in 2006 focused on two simple principles: respect for the harvest and respect for the environment. In 2012, a 1200 m² photovoltaic roof was built to produce the equivalent of the energy needed to cool the entire facility. This simple and coherent tool permits us to focus on the product, to reveal the subtle richness of the CHINON terroirs.

CUVÉE STORY

The Clos des Marronniers covers just over 7 hectares. A single continuous plot, once surrounded by walls, selected for its very homogeneous terroir of slightly clayey gravel. The grapes are sorted, destemmed, and then gravity vatted. Before fermentation, a cold maceration period for 5 to 6 days takes place . The total vatting period lasts for 15 days to 3 weeks. Finally, half of the cuvée is aged in stainless steel vats and the other half in 2 to 5-year-old oak barrels for 12 months.

TASTING

Bright garnet color. Nose of red berries, redcurrants, and sour cherries, softened by vanilla notes. A seductive palate combining the juiciness of cherries and raspberries, a touch of licorice, supple tannins, and a persistent finish of cocoa.
